Assuming that the standard model of cosmology is correct then 68.3% of the total energy in the present-day observable universe is constituted by dark energy. It is an unknown form of energy which is hypothesized to permeate all of space, tending to the expansion of the universe which was confirmed in the early 1990s. There are two proposed forms of dark energy

1.        Empty space is in fact not empty. It can possess its own energy and as more space comes into existence, more of this energy-of-space would appear causing the universe to expand faster and faster. - Cosmological Constant Theory

2.        Dark Energy is actually a new kind of dynamical energy fluid or field whose effect on the expansion of the universe is the opposite of that of matter and normal energy. – Quintessence model.
