During my time as a tutor I have come across several Mathematical myths. More often than not it’s the parents that bring these to my attention and they themselves have believed the story. A very interesting myth that the children have managed to convince the parents is that playing video games will help improve their Mathematical skills which is in fact not true. I have no idea how by jumping, crawling and shooting stuff you improve your cognitive reasoning. So it’s better to buy your four year old building blocks rather than an expensive violence filled computer game for your teen if your motives are purely academical. By saying this I do not mean you should shun your children from any sort of fun. When you play cards and if you are adept in it you start counting cards and that is a very high level Mathematical skill.
