It was the legendary Pythagoras that initially made a relation between Mathematics and music where a stretched string tied in its ends would produce a sound based on the vibrations. When he divided the string into two parts he found that the same sound was produced but more acute. But when he divided it into 3 parts the sound produced was completely different from the above two. These subdivisions and combinations later paved the way for the stringed instruments we use today. The Chinese still follow the same stringed theory for their instruments and music. The western music which makes use of 12 notes merely made a comprehensive system where each note is equidistance from the other.
