Combinatorics is the branch of Mathematics that studies the enumeration, combination, and permutation of sets of elements and the mathematical relations that characterize their properties. Combinatorics is often described briefly as being about counting, and indeed counting is a large part of Combinatorics. As the name suggests, however, it is broader than this. Combinatorics has many applications in other areas of Mathematics, including graph theory, coding and cryptography, and probability. First combinatorial problems have been studied by ancient Indian, Arabian and Greek Mathematicians.
