Lauded as an important milestone, NASA engineers have successfully connected the James Webb Space Telescope at Northrop Grumman’s facilities in California. Touted as NASA’s complex and most powerful space telescope, it will explore the planets and moons in our solar system and distant galaxies by using infrared light.

To achieve this feat, engineers carefully lifted the Webb telescope using a crane. It was slowly guided into place, by making sure all the primary points were perfectly aligned and seated properly. For now, the observatory has been mechanically connected, but in the future, it will be connected electrically and then the electric connections will be tested. Furthermore, the engineers will deploy a sun shield which is five-layered, so as to keep the telescope’s mirrors and scientific instruments cold by shielding the infrared light from the sun, moon and the earth. It is anticipated that this telescope will solve mysteries of our solar system and far-away distant galaxies.
