Ever since the days of Einstein, several experiments have consistently proven that light has a dual nature which means it acts as both as a particle and as a wave. A research team led by Fabrizio Carbone at EPFL has conducted an experiment and pictured the first ever pictorial evidence of this phenomenon. The experiment was conducted by means of a UV light to hit a metal surface and by a process known as the photo-electric effect and the use of electrons to image the event. The team could for the very first time visualize light as a standing wave as well as a particle. “This experiment demonstrates that for the first time ever we can film Quantum mechanics and its paradoxical nature directly. Being able to image and control, quantum phenomena at the nanometer scale like this open up a new route towards quantum computing” says Fabrizio Carbone
