We often see NBA players consistently scoring free throws with near percent accuracy. Of course, they got it through years of training and experience but there is certain math behind the process of a free throw. Studying over millions of free-throws, it has been estimated that 3 Hz backspin is the best amount and it should take about one second for the ball to reach the basket since it has left the hand. If the average height above the ground is estimated at 7ft, then the launch angle should be 52°. At this degree, the shooter can be off by small margins and it will not tamper with the success of the shot as much. It will not hurt your chances to take the shot from this specified degree. The same does not apply when you take the shot after the initial jump or jump shot in short.
