The Big Bang model of the universe is one of the most accepted models of the creation of the universe. The problem arises when the iteration of the initial values of certain phenomenon during the big bang will make the universe look far different from what it is today. In the case of the flatness problem, the phenomenon that we consider is the density of matter and energy in the universe. The value we obtain determines the space-time curvature in our universe. Right now its value is very close to a particular critical value that is required for the universe to be flat and when we consider the critical value over cosmic time, the early universe must have had a density even closer to the critical density which means that the universe must have started off nearly flat.
