Microwaves are a form of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths usually ranging from about one meter to one millimeter; with frequencies between 300 MHz (1 m) and 300 GHz (1 mm). Even though different agencies in different provinces have different reading, this is the most common among them. They travel by line-of-sight and have no diffraction properties. They are limited by the visual horizon and cannot follow the earth's surface or reflect from the ionosphere. Their practical communication distances are limited to roughly 1 kilometer as at the high end of the band they are absorbed by gases in the atmosphere. Therefore their everyday practical applications are limited to garage door openers and keyless entry systems, and for cooking food in microwave ovens among others.
