Second is the base unit of ‘Time’ which is one of the fundamental quantities, as defined by the International System of Units. It is also part of several other units of measurement like meters per second for velocity, meters per second per second for acceleration, and per second for frequency. We can define a second as 1/86400 of a day. As in there is 24 hours in a day, and each hour would consist of 60 minutes which in turn would have 60 seconds. Historically however, a second was defined as the division of the Earth’s rotation cycle. Its true definition is “the total time taken for a caesium-133 atom at 0 K temperatures to complete 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state.” This period is what has been come to be known as 1 second.
