We all remember learning about the three different states of matter, namely solid, liquid and gas but then we were introduced to a fourth state – plasma, but in reality, there exists a fifth state of matter called ‘Bose-Einstein Condensates’.

This state was first predicted by Satyendra Nath Bose and Albert Einstein in the year 1924. In 1995, the first ever breakthrough happened when Eric Cornell and Carl Weiman cooled a sample of rubidium to within a few degrees of absolute zero, they found out that there is almost no kinetic energy being transferred from one atom to another, the atoms begin to clump together. There are no longer thousands of separate atoms, just one “super atom. A BEC, which is used to study these quantum effects on a macro level is formed by cooling a gas of extremely low density, about one-hundred-thousandth the density of normal air, to ultra-low temperatures and are also used to create superfluids and simulate conditions that might apply in black holes.
