In particle physics, a hadron is a composite particle made of two or more quarks held together by the strong force. This is very similar to how molecules are held together by the electromagnetic force.

Hadrons are categorized into two families:

•          Baryons - made of an odd number of quarks - usually three quarks

•          Mesons - made of an even number of quarks - usually one quark and one antiquark.

Except for protons and neutrons that are bound in atomic nuclei, all hadrons have short lives and are produced in the high-energy collisions of subatomic particles. Those related to free protons are comparatively stable, as in their rate of decay is in the order of 1034+ years.
