Particle physicists have developed an elegant theoretical model that gives a framework for our current understanding of the fundamental particles and forces of nature known as the Standard model. In this model, there exists a hypothetical, ubiquitous quantum field that is supposed to be responsible for giving particles their masses called Higgs field and the particle associated with this Higgs field is called the Higgs boson. It is named after physicist Peter Higgs, who in 1964, along with six other scientists, proposed the mechanism, which suggested the existence of such a particle. Its existence was confirmed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations based on collisions in the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN. In very simple words the ‘Higgs Boson’ particle is what gives each and every object that we can observe the property of ‘mass’.
