Tachyons are hypothetical particles that travel faster than light and have 'imaginary' masses. These particles have never been observed nor are their influence felt. These are theoretical particles in string theory. The term comes from the Greek word tachy, meaning "rapid” or “swift”.

The term imaginary mass refers to the result that is obtained from taking the square root of a negative number and this particle can only attain a physical meaning at speeds greater than light. According to Maxwell's equations, tachyon-like quasiparticles can really exist when coupled to inverted atomic media. In special relativity, a tachyon would have space-like four-momentum,[4] in contrast to ordinary particles that have time-like four-momentum. Tachyons however do violate causality and is the main reason why many deny its potential existence.
