Around 13.7 billion years ago our universe sprang into existence as "singularity". Singularities can be imagined as infinitesimally small, infinitely hot, infinitely dense ‘things’. Prior to that moment there was nothing; and after that moment our universe came to be. After this, the universe began to expand and cool down to the size and temperatures we know now and this expansion is called the ‘Big Bang’. Whenever we hear the word, ‘big bang’ we tend to imagine a violent explosion, which is not the case. Don’t imagine the big bang as a balloon exploding but as a balloon that keeps growing bigger. There are several explanations that prove that the Big bang did occur and while it is not conclusive that it was the reason for the origin of the universe it still remains the most plausible.
